- Page 2- Page 3: Engine Rebuild
In 2008, the original 1980 port engine in
Forever Young, needed to be rebuilt. The starboard engine was previously
rebuilt several years ago.
▼ The fun begins. Here
I've got the old Chevy 454 stripped down before yanking the engine. The
exhaust manifolds, heat exchanger, muffler and carburetor have already been
removed. All together, there are almost 50 hose clamps that have to be
undone!

▼ Mark, the general manager of
Gig Harbor
Marina, supervises as the old mill and tranny is pulled out of the bilge
beneath the saloon. We had only about one eighth of an inch clearance on each
side of the engine going through the cabin door.

▼ The engine is in the pickup;
it will get further stripped down to bare block and heads before going to the
shop.

▼ After a month at the
rebuilder (and a couple grand), the Chevy 454 is ready for painting and
assembly. The Paragon transmission was also rebuilt at a different shop.

▼ After two
months, the final installation is complete, and the engine is
purring. I think I earned myself a beer. Sooner or later I will add an
electronic conversion kit to the distributer to reduce future tune-up needs.
